The Land of Famine is a major geographic feature of southwestern Hyrule, forming the southwestern border of the known world.

Geography[]

The Land of Famine was once a lush extension of the Plains of Ordona, covered by coniferous forests that were part of the great primeval forests that once covered much of Hyrule. Since the death of its guardian Maku Tree, it has become a labyrinth of mountains, canyons, and wasteland forming the southwestern border of the mapped continent of Hyrule. Cursed by lifeless soil and Haunts, it effectively cuts off access to the lands to the south and west, from which the Blins, Ikanians and Garo originated. It is bordered to the north by the Plains of Ordona, to the east by the Ikana Canyons and Ison Valley, and to the north by the Moblin Wastelands/Crucible of Hylia.

The only landmark is the corpse of the former guardian of the land, the Dead Maku Tree, from which the ghostly waters of Termina flow and unleash Poes into the world.

History[]

Age of Myth[]

During the Age of Myth, the Deku Trees emerge as avatars of order in the world, and under their guidance, as the Time of Dragons waned, primeval forests covered much of the surface of Hyrule. One of their kind, now only known as the Dead Maku Tree, watched over the coniferous forests of the southwest, in what would become known as the Plains of Ordona.

Ancient Age[]

After the end of the Time of Dragons and Triforce War, one of the Firstborn peoples, the Blins, migrated northeast from lands outside Hyrule, settling the southwestern Plains of Ordona.

For unknown reasons, a crack into Termina opened in a large valley in the Land of Famine, and the Maku Tree settled itself over the portal in an effort to seal it. This killed it, and failed to seal the crack, from which restless souls of the dead, known as Haunts, still emerge. The death of the Maku Tree and influence of Termina reduced the surrouding land to an ashen, cursed wasteland, much like would befall the Kingdom of Ikana.
